David Baker is a regular at AWF shows. AWF Fansite thought we would get his feelings all things wrestling and AWF.
==========================================================================================
Hi David, how are you?
Fine, Thanks for having me.
How long have you been a wrestling fan?
I've been a fan of professional wrestling since I was 9. The first ever wrestling event I saw on TV was WWF 1995 Royal Rumble at friend's house who had satellite. The only thing I knew about "wrassling" back then was a guy named Hulk Hogan, but this was the first time I sat down and watched an entire event and fell in love with the whole spectacle. I remember a great match between Jeff Jarrett and Razor Ramon and also watching Shawn Michaels and The British Bulldog starting the rumble from 1st and 2nd and going the whole distance. It was great.
Who was your favourite wrestler?
The British Bulldog and Bret "Hitman" Hart were my favourites. Bret for his technical abilities and noble character and Bulldog's strength and speed, plus Bulldog was my hometown hero as I was born in Bolton in Greater Manchester. I met his son Davey Hart Smith after a FCW event in Florida last year and I was wearing a vintage WWF british bulldog shirt which he signed and he told me he can't wait till he gets his own WWE shirt just like his father, so that was really cool. GO THE PINK & BLACK ATTACK!
Who is your current favourite wrestler?
Christian/Cage. I've been following him since the Brood, E & C, Un-Americans,TNA and ECW. I'm a Peep. His style, athletic ability, his mic skills, his character. Face or Heel he is always Captain Charisma. Also Randy Orton and Edge in WWE. For TNA its got to be AJ Styles and James Storm. If I could do able to do half the things AJ can do, I would be simply phenomenal.
WWE or TNA?
TNA, I haven't been much of a fan of WWE since Wrestlemania 21 (coincidence that's when Cena won his first WWE championship). I jumped to TNA when Christian did and just fell in love the wrestling style and the companies respect for professional wrestling. I great mix of young talent and legends, it really filled the void for me after the monday night war ended. I'm still a WWE fan and I watch it and hope it returns to the glory days of the attitude era (plus to follow Christian)
How did you discover AWF?
I discovered AWF about 3 years ago when they did a show at Campbelltown Catholic Club. This was before the huge Cube shows, they held the events in a small function room upstairs. A few mates and I would go down cause back then it was hard to find live wrestling events in Sydney and to have a local promotion at a local drinking hole got me started.
What do you like about AWF?
It's a great fan atmosphere, there's alot of great talent across all divisions and the wrestlers really appreciate the fans and its so easy to interact with the wrestlers after the show. It's great entertainment and the matches are really good at telling a story and good characters, you care about who wins, you get behind the Faces and really hate the Heels, it's not about "spots" like other Australian wrestling companies.
Who is your favourite AWF wrestler?
Il Cognito is my favourite, I can't help but mark out for him (as much as he hates it). Great heel character, great wrestling ability, great mic skills. But recently I'm becoming a huge fan of the Cornershop Connection, Traffic & Frankie the Italian. I love a good comedy tag-team, they remind me of beer-money. Also Max Comic, he's a future star and champion of AWF.
What would you say to wrestling fans that haven't seen AWF?
More people need to come out and support AWF. It's great entertainment, great wrestling and a great night out. People brush of Australian wrestling cause its not "WWE" but its great for families and the kids can come and meet the wrestlers at the shows, its great for both casual fans and marks. Trust me I've been to Raw, Smackdown, ECW, PPV in the USA and live WWE events in Australia and believe me when I say AWF is more fun and great value for money.
Thank you for your time.
Like wise, a pleasure.
